Armagedon: Death then nothing
26/07/10 || Trauma
Wait, this is the band I heard certain GD’ers praising/getting excited about? Whoa guys, so sorry. I very nearly went into Smalley-mode there. Reviewing a Polish band and all here, and his ingenious ripping of a good Polish band is still fresh in my mind. I tell ya, isn’t he just the finest writer this site has ever been graced with? Boy, I wish he was tied up to the radiator in my basement. What would go on down there begins with an “s” and ends in “hotgun blast”.
Onto something actually important, this band called Armagedon. I’m sure they are spelling it in some old way, the way that sect of jews we now call christians spelled it or something in the ancient Weissbrew language. First off: they are Polish and they play death metal only the way the Polish can, so it’s already off to a good start. I hear a good bit of Lost Soul and Vader in this (NOOOOO SHIT? Seriously? Wow, what a curveball). Musical compositions do the Pole-death proud. Vocals are a bit on the boring side, however.
I cannot put my goddamn finger on why the title-track opener sounds… how should I put this, so “at home”? It’s like I’ve known the song all my life. Now, don’t jump to conclusions, it’s not the greatest song this side of a gumjob. The first few riffs of the song just set you down into Pole-land, familiar territory that you are so happy to actually hear. It’s not like you’re being set up in some extravagant mansion with only the highest class hookers in each bedroom making sweet love to each other before beckoning you in to pour mustard all over you, lick it off, then give you a horseradish enema. Not your style? I feel for you, then. High class hookers are not meant for sex, but for the really freaky shit.
Sorry for digressing, where the fuck was I? Oh, yes. You’re not being set up for a big wow or anything. It’s worth the listen, most definitely. More than one listen? Maybe. Multiple? You have to be the judge there. What I hear is quality death metal, but it’s also nothing that’s going to cause a great shift of the leaders of the Polish scene. I can’t even give you any recommended cuts from the album, save the opener. It’s good, but not good enough to warrant a jizz-fest from yours truly.
